Summer Reading Assignments for Grades 10-12

My number one goal is to prepare you for your college composition and literature classes and to be lifelong learners and lovers of the English language. Your summer preparation is vital to your success. All books should be read by the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. Students should be prepared for class discussion, written analysis, and/or other evaluation the first few days of school. The required writing responses that accompany each assigned reading are due the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. Assignment instructions may be picked up from the school’s office or assessed via Mrs. Garner’s school website https://achievesms.org/pike-kgarner/.

 

Required Books

 

10th Grade

  • The Art of Styling Sentences (Fifth Edition) by Ann Longknife and K.D. Sullivan (ISBN: 978-0-7641-4783-8)

  • AND choose ONE of the following: Night by Elie Wiesel, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, or The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

 

11th Grade:

  • How to Read Literature Like a Professor (Revised Edition) by Thomas C. Foster (ISBN: 978-0-06-230167-3)

  • AND choose ONE of the following: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Nora Zeale Hurston, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, or Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

 

12th Grade:

  • The College Student’s Guide to Writing a Great Research Paper by Erika Eby (ISBN: 978-1601386052) (I highly recommend purchasing the hard copy of this)

  • AND choose ONE of the following: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, or Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie.
